Now, that I sheet mask every day, I have been massively neglecting my other potted masks, but #LunarFebruary has forced me to re-evaluate my stash (something I try to do once a month) and discover gems that had been hiding…behind other skincare gems…starting with the renowned Korean skincare brand 23 Years Old! After trying a couple of their sheet masks, I starting reading some REALLY good things about their Aqua Bab Modeling Mask and picked up a package of 4 when I saw them on sale at T&T!

So, what IS a modeling mask? Also known as “rubber masks”, modeling masks were initially reserved as spa-only treatments in Korea and is like a hybrid between a potted mask and a sheet mask because while wet and goopy at first, it congeals and lifts off the skin just like a sheet mask. It sounds gross, but is actually QUITE cool! As the mask congeals, it forms a one-way occlusive barrier that forces active ingredients into the skin. The rubbery texture is due to marine algae in the mixture and can be mixed with a variety of actives depending on your skin goals.
Traditionally, I think there is a powder that you would mix with water that you would need to measure out, but in this case everything is measured for you. The Aqua Bab mask comes in two parts: a gel packet containing the algae component as well as a host of other very nice plant-based ingredients like ginger, cica, licorice root, niacinamide and hydrolyzed collagen and a powder containing more fun goodies like hibiscus, allantoin, aloe and niacinamide.
The packaging for this modeling mask is quite thoughtful! What I love is that the packaging also doubles as a mixing bowl that you can keep reusing!
Application was so easy! I’ve only ever used one or two other modeling masks and the drip factor was unreal! This was such a nice and solid formula where the whole process was mess-free and even though in photos it LOOKS like the mask is dripping, it literally looks frozen in time! I was then able to bake muffins without even feeling like I had something as terrifying as this mask on!
You are supposed to remove from bottom and roll upward towards the eyes, but I checked to see if the mask was ready from my forehead and it just started rolling down as gravity took over! Wait time was about 30 minutes and the mask came off really easily in whole pieces. My skin felt super perky and bouncy after dry down with zero tackiness.
Final verdict: Totally loved this mask and I am already planning out when I will use this again because it’s just such a hydrating treatment! I also love how fun it was to peel off!
